Best Sub in it's price range! |
I found this Sub on clearance for only 249.00.
For this price the build quality and sound can't be beat. It can produce very tight accurate base even with a 12" driver. That being said when music demands a boomy sound it has no problem fulfilling this need either. The enclosure is extremely solid and well finished with a very stable feel and fairly compact size for the sound it can produce.
I would recommend this sub to anyone wanting great bass without spending tons of cash.

Great on this discriminating ear |
I have been building my home theater on a budget but am discriminating. I helped a buddy build a $15k theater in a dedicated room with sound panels and all and have an ear to truly enjoy it. I like tight well defined bass in my music from the "umph" of the intro to "Running with the Devil" to the nuances of cello, timpani, string bass etc. I like my movies to have impact I can feel . . . often a lower "rumble". I had decided to build my own sub due to cost but at $249 with free shipping I could not resist (nor build anything close). The frequency range is excellent - nearly impossible to hit these lows and have this kind of power in this price range. I am a fan of Polk products. I have 6 1/2" with satellite tweeters in my car with a Rockford amp and they rock so I figured I could not go wrong. This arrived in 3 days. I hooked it up to my Yamaha 665 an ran the auto setup. Wow!!! Very tight natural bass and the movies kick butt!!!! It does everything I need it to do and does it well! At this price you cannot go wrong. I have heard units that cost over $500 that cannot keep up with this bad boy.
The only feature that would be nice to have is remote control to do the level and crossover tweaking from my Lazy Boy. Thumbs up Polk Audio (again)! |

BANG for the BUCK, for sure!!!!! |
Wow, I haven't had this for very long now - just a few days. But, I've gotten it set up, and I'm already amazed. Even before this thing gets broken in (it takes a sub a little bit of time to loosen up, and perform optimally), this thing rocks! Smooth, punchy, but WAY deep and loud!!! I've owned another 12" sub, and an 8". I currently am running a 10" WITH this new PSW505. Now, I WANT ANOTHER ONE!!!!

I've just sold the 10", and added another one of the PSW505 models! Oh wow!!! I now have a problem...I have vibrations in the fireplace that I have to remedy! |

If you're setting up a professional, studio-quality sound system, you might want to get something else, but for the home user, I can't imagine a better solution than this one.
My only complaint isn't with the speaker itself, but with the fact that if I'm using it late at night, I know I have to turn it off because my neighbors will be annoyed.
I don't really have a lot of "boomy, bassy" music. I'm more of a jazz, "new age," and classical guy. Instrumental, and largely acoustic, music, not much in the way of electronic and not a whole lot of vocals. In that stuff which I do have which is vocal-heavy (Pink Floyd, Dire Straights, etc) there's still plenty of acoustic music involved and a lot less electronic "noisy" stuff.
For vocals, I can't tell if this device improves the sound at all, but that's normal for subwoofers. And for acoustical music, there are only some "low-lights" of the music (rather than "highlights," you see) which come through, but except for bass drum and tympani drum hits, I don't really consciously pick up too much. The sound from my system is slightly clearer with this on than off, but it's not terribly notable.
So, for my musical tastes, this isn't really about music. What it IS about, is MOVIES. And from a "movie standpoint," this thing is INCREDIBLE.
Most movies don't have tremendous bass, of course, throughout. It's mainly action-flicks and sci-fi flicks where a subwoofer really shines through. The deep rumble as a Star Wars starship flies past, or the feel of explosions in a war movie, for example, are phenomenal. I've been in the best theaters, and listened (or rather, "experienced") a number of really nice "home theater" setups. I've even been in real combat. I can say, the effect from this reminds me of the real thing, far more than it reminds me of any "theater" situation I've been in.
I'm using a Pioneer 1019 A/V receiver, feeding into this by the unfiltered input. I've set my crossover to 100Hz. And it's just remarkable how REAL these sorts of things come through in movies. Explosions feel real. Gunfire feels like real gunfire. And so on and so on.
I'm sold. 12" subwoofers always put 10" or 8" subwoofers to shame in terms of movie-sound-reproduction. And this is the best 12" sub I've had the opportunity to use so far.
The fact that I got it so ridiculously cheaply is the most remarkable part. I can only imagine that Polk has an even better version coming soon, to replace this one. But it's hard for me to imagine what that might be, since this one is virtually PERFECT from my perspective.
It's been discontinued, so get it while (and where) you can. If you can get one, you won't be disappointed! |
