The Age of Miracles is the 3rd Zoe/Rounder release from world renowned singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter. The Age of Miracles has been a work in progress since 2007. The album is a personal exploration of regret and resilience but also a larger, more universal expression of wonder at the times we are living in. Carpenter is backed by an incredible band that includes Matt Rollings (piano, B-3 organ), Russ Kunkel (drums), Duke Levine (electric and acoustic guitar), Glenn Worf (bass), Dan Dugmore (steel and 12 string guitar) and Eric Darken (percussion). It also features guest vocals by Vince Gill and Alison Krauss. |

More of the same |
If you've liked MCC's recent albums, you'll like this one. It's more of the same quiet, introspective, competent songwriting we've seen before. But if you enjoyed her earlier albums, you're out of luck.
I'm a long-time MCC fan, and I bought this album out of a knee-jerk reflex. But on listening to it, I realized that I couldn't tell Age of Miracles from any of her last five albums! Essentially, after 1992's Come On, Come On, MCC's albums started losing all their energy and fun, until by 2001's Time-Sex-Love, the formula was perfected. She hasn't altered it since then, except perhaps to get even quieter. 1996's A Place in the World is the last MCC album to have any kind of independent identity in my mind.
In short, Age of Miracles is just like the rest of the decade's MCC albums. Since I have all those, it will likely be the last I buy - there's only so many copies I need of the same song over and over again.
PS If you do want it, another Brick & Nortar store offers it with a bonus track (that sounds just like all the others on the album).

great cd. |
before listening to this album, i was a skeptic about listening too the cd. I figured the music would drag and be geared towards an particular group of music fanatics. However i was amazed on this album, the music is very soft but creates a nice beat to it.
i highly recommned this cd |

The right tunes at the right time . . . |

After reading up on MCC's struggles and triumphs, I have much better insight into and appreciation for the songs on this album. Not to mention so many ring true for me at this point in my life. I have most of her albums - and this is one of the best. Incredibly introspective and acoustically beautiful. Don't see any appearing on Top40 radio - but then that has become a barren wasteland at best these days. Maybe a Total MCC channel on satellite radio . . . |
